Hey DMC fans, lets work this out!

Dante_New_DMC-600x300

Welcome and hello! Let me start this small write up with a statement: I think the outcry across the web over the upcoming game DMC is pathetic and is just another display of a first world problem. Actually, to be honest I wouldn’t even call it that. The complaints I keep hearing from past DMC fans are nothing to complain over, and I’ll touch on them later. Here is a follow up statement: I am no Devil May Cry fan. This being said, I really don’t think being a fan of the series matters when speaking on the topic and i’ll tell you why.

I bit my tongue for the longest time because I thought to myself, “I’m not a fan, so I don’t know how they feel.” I was being too kind. I started making comparisons to some of my beloved games that fit into the same criteria, these would be games that are very combat driven and lack amazing story elements. One of my favorite examples being the Souls series. If that series was in the same situation as DMC, e.g. different(yet quality)developers, changes in the art direction, differences in the gameplay, and an enhanced plot, I can tell you I would not be up in arms like these crazed fans and I LOVE Dark Souls. I won’t explain how I would feel if that happened, but I’ll let you deduce how my brain would work in that situation by reading the rest of this article. Now let’s get more DMC specific.

The first thing fans complain about is one of two things, the style/art, or the gameplay. In my honest opinion I feel the art is better than past DMC games, and the gameplay isn’t worse just not the same. At this point, all the haters are going to point at me and say “aha, he admitted it, this isn’t dmc.” Yet it is, look at the box. The point is things can change and most things will over time. When this happens you have two options. First of all, you can adapt to the changes, and the other option is to move on and replace what you lost. I feel a lot of gamers out there will enjoy the new DMC and accept it for what it is. Yet in the case of the opposite there are other substitutes, for example Bayonetta. I’ve always believed you should follow a developer not a franchise and Hideki Kamiya moved on long ago and created what most people would consider a better game in Bayonetta. Now people may tell me “But that isn’t Dante!” Fair enough, yet that also contradicts the majority of people who say their sole reason for hating this new game is the horrid gameplay (which isn’t at all bad in my opinion). Going back to my earlier example of Dark Souls, If the gameplay were to be altered, It would be a different game. This at first would probably make me a little sad or even angry, but being a gamer that loves all GOOD games I would give it a chance and probably like it if it was developed by a quality developer on Ninja Theory’s level. I also wouldn’t have the option of moving on and finding that experience elsewhere because another game of that style just doesn’t exist. Unless From Software did something similar, in which case like I said earlier I would be following my beloved developer already. I just gave you a solution to your problem, but hey, let’s continue and try to increase your understanding of the industry to quell your anger that much more.

It is no secret that a lot of developers and publishers in the game industry struggle to make money. They spend hours of their days for years to produce a quality game in hopes that it will sell so they can continue to do what they love. Something I hear a lot of these haters say is that they won’t buy this new DMC because they feel it will make Capcom go back to the roots of the franchise. This is a ridiculous way of thinking in my opinion. If Capcom decides to hire a new developer to put a new spin on an old series it is most likely because the old games didn’t have the dedicated fan base some may think and Capcom didn’t expect to make money.  Now if that fanbase is completely out of the equation and the new game sells even less I have a pretty good feeling that will only put the franchise on an extended hiatus. You may never even see the series again, who knows? The only thing that this fanbase is able to achieve is the destruction of a very good developer in Ninja Theory and  another push that puts Capcom that much closer to bankruptcy.

You gamers that love your “hardcore” games are pushing the industry that much closer to a world where all we have is Modern Warfare 7 and a new rendition of angry birds. What you should be doing is sticking by the sides of your beloved publishers and developers who have spent all of those hours making your life what it is today, not trying to take their jobs and dreams away from them. Gamers and The creative minds who make games have to support each other to make the gaming world go round. In the mean time give games a chance and enjoy them for what they are and i’m sure Capcom will put something out in the future to appeal to your taste.

Keep in mind, I didn’t write this article to throw a rant towards the people who have been complaining. This isn’t to start any huge arguments. What I wanted to do is get everyone thinking and try to get a lot of people to realize at the end of the day gamers play games and we should enjoy any good games that are made. I have played this new DMC  at multiple events, and for anyone to say it is garbage hasn’t played a bad game before. Don’t hold a game to the name that’s attached, it’s only a name. Be happy that we have the easy role in the consumer/industry relationship and get over these minuscule complaints. I hope this therapy session has helped people out there, and here’s to a great release to the new DMC.
